We receive lots of emails seeking advice on which of our natural soap bars are best to use on various skin conditions. We’ve listed the top requests here. Whilst natural soap is not a wonder product and might not be right for everyone, we do know we’ve gained many loyal customers over the years. If you have a skin complaint, whether it’s acne or psoriasis, maybe a bar of natural soap is worth a try.
Natural soap is made with plant based oils and butters using a traditional saponification process to create a bar rich in glycerine. Compared to commercial soap, it won’t contain harsh cleansing agents or potential irritants:
Oily and combination skins will benefit from gentle cleansing of natural soap rather than stripping the skin of its natural protective oils. Look for soaps which contain naturally astringent or balancing citrus essential oils such as Lemon & Bergamot Soap. Clay enriched soaps such as our Juniper Berry Soap , which gently exfoliate skin to unclog pores can also be helpful.
The mild and gentle lather of Goats Milk & Honey Soap can help soothe irritated and cracked skin. Its rich moisturising lather will help prevent the skin from drying out. Unscented soaps are generally recommended to avoid further irritation, though a soothing essential oil such as lavender, paired with creamy oat milk can be very calming.
To avoid drying out the soap, look for natural soaps high in conditioning olive oil and low in cleansing oils such as coconut oil or palm oil. Our Calendula Soap is made from 70% olive oil based soap and enriched with moisturising cocoa butter will gently cleanse the skin.
Rose Geranium Soap contains one of the best essential oils for mature skins; the antioxidant properties in rose geranium oil is purported to help reduce the signs of aging. Paired with a blend of white and red kaolin to gently slough away dead skin cells to reveal the newer, more radiant cells underneath.
It’s been wonderful to witness so many recents converts to natural soap, whether through people looking to find plastic-free alternatives, or from all the extra handwashing we’ve endured through Coronavirus outbreaks. A solid bar of soap doesn’t always guarantee natural though. If you have any doubt about ingredients or a formulation, just ask - one thing is true, soap makers love to talk about soap!
